"Hi Girls... and Sunjay"! :)
Well, this will sadly be my last post for Dance 10 this semester. As you know, I'm going off on my mat leave soon and this week will be my last week. I am really sorry that the timing worked out this way that I have to leave part-way through the course. At the same time though I am just grateful that I got to be with you for as long as I have, pregnant and all!!! I don't know about you all, but I've had a great time teaching you dance and hope you've enjoyed the course thus far. I wish you all the very best in the rest of the course and hope that you'll recommend Dance 10 to other students next year, and that if there is a Dance 11 offered in the second semester (when I'm back full time), that you'll take it!! I think we've got a great thing started here, and look forward to building a full program where we can do more active performances within the school! Keep an open mind, keep stretching, keep active, and keep on practicing, as the old adage "Practice makes perfect" is 100% true! All the best everyone and please keep dancing!!!
Take care,
-Ms.Sundin :)

Hi Class,
This coming week we will be focussing primarly on putting together a short hip hop routine. As I mentioned last week, each of you is expected to learn 8 counts of a new step to bring to and teach to the class. You may use the Internet as a source of inspiration or make up steps on your own.
I look forward to seeing what you come up with! This will be our last week focussing on hip hop, so bring your all and let's have some fun! :)
See you in class!

Hi Class,
Many of you have still not handed in your Questions & Answers from the movie "Center Stage". Also, two groups have forgotten to present their Warm-up?! Might I remind you that report cards are fast-approaching. Wednesday is the cut-off for marks!!! If you have forgotten or forget to present your Warm-up this week, you will have a chance to make it up, but not before the report card comes out. That means your mark will reflect an "Incomplete" until a later date.
This coming week we will do our Warm-ups, work on Hip Hop, and possibly watch a movie on Thursday. We'll see!!
Please remember to come to class prepared- that means proper attire, hair BACK & OFF YOUR FACE, and bringing water.
50% of your grade is based on in-class participation, readiness, effort and attitude!! Be prepared. This may be a fun class, but it is still a class in school, with rules and expectations for good behavior like any other!
Remember this Friday is a non-instructional day so there will not be any classes.
See you in class!

Hi Class,
Please ensure you have handed in your "Center Stage" Q&A sheet by Tuesday so that I can mark them.
If you were absent the day of your jazz technique evaluation, the make-up day is Wednesday after school since we have class last block anyway. Be sure to stay and get it done, as it is definitely affecting your mark!
Speaking of marks, as you know I posted the current marks on Friday, with a slight change as discussed in class. Instead of Daily Evaluation being worth 40% (25%-25%-1%), I have changed it to 50% (20%-20%-10%), which gives everyone more credit for their day-to-day effort than on skills and technique alone. I decided on this since it is a beginner class with a lot of different styles of dance. I felt this was much fairer and gives you credit for your attitude, participation, and effort more than your technique alone. This means you do not have to be the best dancer or have the best technique, but rather, as long as you are putting in your best effort, you will pass the class! For most of you this gave you a 2-3% boost!
Please remember if you are absent to always bring a note to class the next day (and don't just call the office), as absences affect your daily evaluation (since I can't evaluate you if you are not present to dance!).Thanks!
Finally, this week we will finish up on our Contemporary routine and will continue to practice our Jazz routine as well.
See you in class! :)

Hi Class,
Last week you had your individual jazz evaluations. I will get these marks to you by Tuesday. If you were absent on Thursday you will need to see me to make arrangements to make up your evaluation.
This week some of you will be presenting your Warm-Ups. Please be ready and do not forget your date!
We will continue working on the jazz routine, as well as watch a dance movie on our double block day. This movie some of you may have already seen, but regardless it is worth watching again. It focusses on the the lives of professional dancers trying to make it at an elite dance school. It gives a glimpse of the stresses of this type of career and the stereotypes that permeate the profession. You will be expected to complete a written assignment related to this movie. Be sure to be in class otherwise you will have to rent and watch the movie in your own time.
Also, if time permits this week, Marina, our lovely peer tutor, may demonstrate and teach you some Contemporary style dance. If not this week, then next week for sure.
Soon we will be moving on to Hip Hop! Stay tuned for that! :)
Please be in class, ready to dance!
See you soon!

Welcome to Dance 10
Hi Everyone and Welcome to Dance 10!
Whether you have prior dance experience or are just beginning your journey into the dance arena, I would like to thank you for enrolling in this class. It is because of your interest that we are able to offer this class for the very first time at LA Matheson and I couldn't be happier!
This blog will be used to post important information, notices and reminders about class, so please make a habit of checking it regularly. Since we won't be in a traditional classroom or use a lot of paper and pencils, it may be easy to forget that this this is still a regular class for a mark and credit! I will do my best to give you verbal reminders in class each day and update this website weekly! Please check this site every Sunday night for a look at the week to come. You may also find my email address here if you have any questions or need to ask/tell me something.
The first bit of information I'd like to communicate with you is the necessity of proper dance footwear....as per the course outline (see link on right-hand side) and as I will discuss in detail in class, you MUST have proper dance footwear to participate in class. However, if you have never danced before, I realize you likely won't have any dance shoes and do not expect you to make the costly investment of purchasing a brand new pair. I therefore recommend 'foot undies'! These are a great inexpensive alternative (approx. $20) and can be purchased at any dance store. I've listed a few dance stores below, but highly recommend going to Dance Craft. Not only is this store the closest location to our school, but if you tell the store associate you dance at LAMatheson at the time of purchase you will receive a 10% discount!
Nearby Dance Supply Stores in Surrey:
These "foot undies" will allow you to slide and turn on the balls of your feet, while still having your toes and heels for grip and traction. We will using these for the entire first month while we study modern jazz, as well as when we study other forms of dance later in the semester, such as hip hop, tap, ballet, bhangra, bollywood, and possibly even ballroom and square dancing.
I look forward to teaching you all this semester. It's going to be a lot of fun!!!
